Interesting point in 4000BC a sort of key was used by the Assyrians at the Palace of Khorsabad using wooden pins. We have moved a lot further since then and now access controls have a few more options than wooden pins. Most hotels/gyms/gift/ membership cards and companies that need access controls usually have systems in place to either use a Magnetic striped card or an RFID type chip system.

Many Hotels will use a magnetic stripe card that they encode on the front desk to allowing guests access to whichever areas they have paid for. Modern access control systems can also use an NFC card which work in a similar way but its a tap and go rather than swipe. The beauty of both these systems is that the owners have complete control and and take the access off or on from their own in house systems and if a card is lost you can just cancel it and re-issue a new one.
